Hélène N. a 78 ans, c’est au détour d’une rue que nous nous rencontrons, elle vend ses dessins stockés au fond d’un caddie usé qui roule sur les trottoirs les jours de marché à Antony. La découverte est stupéfiante, la centaine de portraits, majoritairement noir et blanc, parfois colorés par touches, se succèdent. Regards noircis, cheveux grattés jusqu’à en trouer le papier, même visage toujours renouvelé qui ressemble étrangement à celui de leur autrice. Parfois les versos de dessins laissent apparaître un fantôme mystique de femme comme ceux que Madame N. cru voir parfois dans les heures sombres de son passé. Œuvre indéfinissable : il a semblé évident que ce travail remarquable devait inaugurer la maison d’édition Myriorama, pour mettre en avant le travail d’une artiste en marge, fascinée autant par l’Italie de la Renaissance que par la statuaire grecque ou la voix de PJ Harvey.

Hélène N. is 78 years old; we met her on a street corner. She sells her drawings, which are stored at the back of a worn-out shopping trolley that rolls along the pavements on market days in Antony. It is a stunning discovery: around a hundred portraits, mostly in black and white, sometimes with touches of colour, follow one after another. Eyes darkened, hair scratched until it pierces the paper, the same face constantly reinvented, bearing a strange resemblance to that of its creator. Sometimes the backs of the drawings reveal a mystical phantom of a woman, like those that Madame N. believed she sometimes saw in the dark hours of her past. An indefinable body of work: it seemed obvious that this remarkable collection should launch the Myriorama publishing house, to showcase the work of an artist on the margins, as fascinated by Renaissance Italy as by Greek statuary or the voice of PJ Harvey.
